Video Shooting Style

That is something that each Videographer has to develop on their own. We have many books, or E-Books, on Wedding Videography that we can recommend, but books will only go so far. Shooting style is something that only comes with practice. There is no way to explain how much experience with the video camera can help a person. Don't be afraid to go out and make mistakes, as long as you are not doing it on someone else's dime of coarse. Experiment and practice with your camera on your own time. A professional Videographer never takes his or her job lightly. People are expecting you to capture the special moments of their lives, don't play around. These are moments that will not come around again and have to be captured with great skill and attention to detail. I would recommend to any budding videographer to go out on weekends and shoot nature scenes, shoot people in the park, use the different settings of your camera and see how they differ in the end result. Only this way will you be able to feel comfortable enough when an odd situation is thrown at you that you will know how your camera will react under these different conditions. A Wedding or Bar mitzvah, or Quinceanera is not the time to find out you don't know how to adjust the aperture on your lens. Even though technology has come a long way since the beginning of video over 40 years ago, a mechanical lens in no way comes close to the human eye. A video camera lens can be fooled easily when in automatic mode. The slight changes from light to dark can cause an auto exposure or an auto focus to go out of whack.

Shooting a Video in Los Angeles and Orange County

Each state or town or community has it's own expectations just like people do. Two very close yet very different communities are Los Angeles and Orange county. Each has it's own pros and cons as far as the landscapes and buildings, but also each has different culture attributes and as a event videographer one has to take that into consideration. The different cultures that have developed in each area have their own attributes and desires as to what needs to be captured during an event. For example a traditional Sweet Sixteen is very different from a Quinceanera. Just as a Jewish wedding is very different from a Catholic Wedding. Before you go out and attempt to know what the important attributes of each culture are a professional videographer should do their best to draw upon their experiences, and friendships to fill in any voids in knowledge, and also do some reading up. There is nothing wrong with studying other cultures and finding out everything you can about them. Nothing puts people more at ease than knowing that the videographer they have chosen to cover their event understands them and is not going to be completely out of sorts at the given event.

Videographer Personality

A Videographer must always be friendly and easily approachable. If you don't like people or don't like dealing with people then don't go into a people business. Event videography whether it be a Wedding, Party, Anniversary, Quinceanera, or Birthday, they all have one thing is common, and that is PEOPLE. Lots and lots of people. Some people are not "people persons". That's fine. Everyone has a right to be the way they feel most comfortable, but pick your profession accordingly. I have been at numerous events where a videographer from an adjoining wedding, or a DJ, or a Photographer have told me "These people are driving me crazy!" or "I hate Weddings!". I just smile and go on my way, but in my mind I have to ask "Then why are you here?" The reality of it is that they are there because they like the money. Yes money does make the world go round as they say, but never do something you hate just for the money. In those situations I am always happy thinking to myself that "I love weddings!" after all, the way I look at it is that I am being paid to go to a party, and I am being paid to share in the best moments of someone's life. How can you not love being there? It's a celebration, it's a time of joy! But in reality I know why they don't like being there. Some of them don't like large groups of people, and others don't like being told what to do. Some videographers make a mistake in believing that their vision of how the video should be shot and edited is the only one that counts. Unfortunately they don't realize that wedding video and all other event video are very personal videos and the customer has a right to have their input heard. Lesson to be learned is never forget that if you are a videographer, always, always listen to your customers, and if you are a customer, first gauge how well a videographer listens to you before you hire them. Talk to the videographer that will shoot your wedding and not to a receptionist or booking agent. The middle man will always promise you the moon, but the person that will do the actually videography is the one that has the final say. The last thing you want to do is find yourself on your wedding day with a surly videographer.
